Are Samurai Swords – Katana and Wakizashi – Legal in the UK?

We’re often asked about UK Law: Are samurai swords, such as Katana and Wakizashi legal?  Does one need a license to own them?

Currently, (we keep this page updated with any changes), the scenario is as follows:

  • All products sold on our website are legal to own in the UK.
  • You can not carry a sword in public without a valid reason.
  • Anyone purchasing a sword must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Samurai and other curved swords are legal, *AS LONG AS* they have been handmade using traditional production methods. All swords sold on our site are made using traditional methods and are legal in the UK.

There is a BBC article from 2008 that claims all Samurai Swords are banned in the UK.  While the article was correct when it was written, it was obsoleted 4 short months later by the passage of an amendment that allowed for swords “…made before 1954 or was made at any other time according to traditional methods of making swords by hand [emphasis added].  All our swords are hand-forged / hand made using these traditional methods, so they are UK legal.

For current laws and more detailed information, please refer to:

UK Knife Laws

UK knife law allows you to carry non-locking pocket knives with a blade length of up to 3 inches (7.62 cm) without any need for a valid reason.

You are allowed to carry a knife that exceeds these guidelines in public, but please remember: you then do need a good reason to carry it. Gov. uk has the following to say on good reasons to carry a knife:

“Examples of good reasons to carry a knife in public can include:

taking knives you use at work too and from work
taking knives to a gallery or museum to be exhibited
the knife is going to be used for theatre, film, television, historical re-enactment, or religious purposes, eg the kirpan some Sikhs carry
A court will decide if you’ve got a good reason to carry a knife if you’re charged with carrying it illegally.”

Abuse is still illegal
Also remember that using any knife (legal or illegal) in any threatening way, is also illegal. So using your (legal) Swiss Army knife in any threatening way is still illegal.

UK Friendly

Because of the conditions listed above, we like to call these knives UK-friendly instead of UK Legal. Knives that are for sale on our website that is not UK Friendly are fine as long as you keep them in your own home, or on your own property.

My item has not arrived on 24-hour service.

We send the items on service requested. 99.9% of the time there are no issues. But sometimes couriers have problems. e.g breakdowns. This is something we cannot control. Please keep this in mind. As we do not guarantee 24 hours!

I have been blocked on chat.

This usually happens as you have been abusive and kept asking the same question. Chat support has a lot of customers to deal with, giving them the best service we can. They cannot sit there all night being hogged by a customer who is abusive and disruptive.
